Report Highlights Firms Are Hired on Expertise, Fired on Value

The report’s findings included: 

  • 26 percent of the in-house lawyers interviewed said that price and budget reductions had driven their decision to seek alternative outside counsel
  • 19 percent said they had parted company with their lawyers because they were simply too expensive
  • 17 percent said they had fired their law firm because they were slow or provided poor service

The report found that when it came to hiring law firms, clients gave various reasons, including:

  • 37 percent of clients were influenced by subject matter expertise
  • 17 percent hired on the basis of geographic presence
  • 15 percent quoted a previous positive experience
  • 11 percent mentioned cost

The research was conducted in 2013 among 968 senior in-house lawyers in $50 million+ revenue organizations operating in all industry sectors throughout the world.
